Preparing for Europe: Visa Changes Every U.S. Traveler Should Know

Planning a trip to Europe? Big adventures await, but starting in 2025, U.S. travelers will need to prepare for a new visa requirement. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) will soon be required for U.S. passport holders traveling to many European countries. But don’t worry—this system is simple and designed to make travel safer for everyone.

What is ETIAS?

ETIAS is not a traditional visa but a visa waiver system that allows U.S. citizens and other travelers from visa-exempt countries to visit Europe for up to 90 days without a visa. To enter Europe starting in 2025, you’ll need to register online with ETIAS before your trip.

Countries Where ETIAS Will Apply:

The ETIAS requirement will affect over 30 countries, including top destinations like France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and Greece. If you’re planning to explore the historic streets of Paris, the beaches of Santorini, or the vineyards of Tuscany, you’ll need to register for ETIAS before your journey. Below is the full list of countries where ETIAS will apply:

  • Western Europe: France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Portugal, Belgium, Netherlands, Austria, Luxembourg, Greece, Malta
  • Eastern Europe: Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania
  • Nordic Countries: Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Iceland, Norway
  • Non-EU Schengen Countries: Switzerland, Liechtenstein
  • Newer Schengen Member: Croatia (joined 2023)
  • Microstates with Schengen Agreements: Monaco, San Marino, Vatican City

Other Countries Expected to Implement ETIAS:

  • Bulgaria and Romania: Not yet part of the Schengen Area, but expected to join and implement ETIAS.
  • Montenegro: Will also be subject to the ETIAS requirement.

How to Apply for ETIAS:

  1. Register Online: Visit the official ETIAS website and fill out the online application.
  2. Valid Passport: Make sure your passport is up to date, as it will be required for your ETIAS application.
  3. Application Details: Provide personal information, travel plans, and background details.
  4. Pay the Fee: A small fee will be required, and approval usually comes quickly—often within minutes.
